Cape Town has received only around 22% of its normal July–August rainfall at the airport.

The rainfall deficit is approximately 120 mm — nearly 80% below normal.

Cape Town’s six major supply dams are currently sitting at approximately 77%.

At the equivalent stage last year, they were above 90%.

That difference matters enormously.

Cape Town normally wants to enter summer with its dams as full as possible because virtually every day from October onwards brings a combination of consumption, agricultural demand and evaporation.

The City of Cape Town has itself stated that dam levels typically need to be around 80% or higher when the annual water assessment is conducted in November to reduce the risk of restrictions.

We are already below that level.

And winter is running out.
